Statement to voters
I believe that the standing of politics and politicians has been degraded in recent years, not only by the poor behaviour of those at the very top of government but by those who serve us, or aspire to serve us, here in Bury North. The Nolan Principles require those in public life to display the following characteristics: Selflessness; Integrity; Objectivity; Accountability; Openness; Honesty; Leadership. I believe that I embody these values, but can we say the same for all candidates in this General Election? This is why I am standing. Let’s look at James Daly, Deputy Chair of the Conservative Party. He took money from IX Wireless whilst residents in Bury were fighting the imposition of their intrusive 5G masts across the Borough. He also voted against requiring improved sewerage systems and against requiring a reduction in the harm caused by untreated sewage discharges. Turning to James Frith, Labour candidate in this election - he works as a lobbyist for clients including the fossil fuel industries. Is this appropriate behaviour from a Labour candidate when the hard-working families of Bury North are struggling to pay fuel bills and energy suppliers are making huge profits to say nothing of the country desperately needing to reduce dependence on fossil fuels to save our planet? Mr Frith also lobbies on behalf of the gambling industry which is estimated by the UK Government to be linked with up to 496 deaths p.a. Is this behaving with integrity? In comparison I have served served operationally in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan numerous times. It was during this time that I developed my sense of duty and service to my country. After 28 years’ service I was medically discharged from the RAF and moved to Bury with my wife Paula and our 2 children. I continued to serve my local community being elected as a councillor for Ramsbottom Ward in May 2022. I also serve my community as chair of the only surviving British Legion Club in Bury and I am Chair of my local resident’s association. I am also a volunteer ranger helping the local council with clearing fallen trees and help out with other local environmental groups and volunteer with Bury RAF Cadets, when I am not working as an unpaid taxi driver for our two children. I believe in Service not Self. Spencer Donnelly Veteran
