Statement to voters
Cahal Burke is a very well known campaigner who lives in the heart of Lindley ward and works at Kirklees College. Cahal is know as a champion of the Lindley community. He has worked tirelessly with local people to establish popular community events. For example the Lindley 10K and the Lindley Carnival. Cahal keeps local residents in touch through a regular FOCUS newsletter that enables people to let ask Cahal for help and support in many different ways. Cahal holds regular councillor help and advice surgeries and has helped many hundreds of local people with their problems. Cahal has been very active in fought changes to HRI for over 15 years! Firstly, when a Labour Government down graded the Maternity unit and began the series of attempts by Government to reduce the HRI to a cottage hospital which is totally unsuitable and unacceptable to Huddersfield and the Colne Valley. Cahal is a determined campaigner speaking up for the people he represents. He has constantly raised concerns about the lack of primary school places in the area despite Kirklees Labour agreeing to the building of hundreds of more houses. The Labour solution is for children to go to less popular schools elsewhere in Huddersfield. Potholed roads is one of the constant complaints Cahal receives from local people. The Lib Dems proposed an extra £1m for repairs but Labour refused to agree. Kirklees Labour has planned to increase car parking charges and for on street parking in Huddersfield. On top of this there are plans to impose charges on the Lidget Street car park in Lindley. And beware of driving in bus lanes as the Council hopes to increase its income by £750,000 from fines! Cahal Burke is a very active campaigner who puts the needs of local people first.
