Statement to voters
A Londoner since 1994, I’ve campaigned with Workers Against Racism against racist attacks and deportations and marched in favour of women’s rights and LGBT equality. Now I’m defending democracy itself. Brexit is the key to this election. The frustration of a majority decision taken in 2016 has posed the question of who really rules Britain: the Remainer elite or the ordinary voter in the street. Without full democratic control over our economy, borders and laws, all great projects of reform will be stymied by legislation not fully and freely consented to by the people. Many Hackney residents voted Remain but as democrats they realise that if their vote is to count in the future, the 2016 referendum result must be respected. As the only candidate committed to leaving the EU cleanly – and to abolishing the House of Lords and making Proportional Representation the basis of our democratic system – I will make sure your voice is heard.
