Statement to voters
I have lived in Leicester for 26 years, in Highfields, since coming here in 1995 to study English at Leicester University. I work in the NHS locally and I am a shop steward in UNISON. In the past, I have served on the Leicestershire and District Trades Council. I have actively campaigned against cuts carried out by Labour locally and by the Conservatives nationally. I took part in the successful campaign to save the Glenfield Children's Heart Centre. We need a similar mass campaign to stop the cuts across Leicester. I stood as Parliamentary candidate in the 2015 election for Leicester South, for TUSC (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition). Socialist Alternative is standing against right-wing Labour candidates in this election, but not against a newer layer of supporters of Corbyn. We oppose the mayoral system, are fighting against cuts and all public representatives of the Socialist Party only take the average wage of those they represent.
